Ageing is something that affects all of us whether we think about it or not; whether we try to curb its effects or just live as though we always have. Some take a defeatist attitude towards ageing, regarding it as something bad that will happen inevitably and which they have no control over. Others may spend significant time, energy, and money to halt and even reverse the process.
I'm here to give you a few 'secrets' that will help to keep you youthful in every respect without wasting money on special creams, expensive surgeries, or wacky fad diets.
I've met people who were under 30 who looked as though they've already lived 80 years. Overweight, poor complexion, no muscle tone, balding head, tired eyes, even wrinkles. I've also met plenty of folks well into their golden years who maintain incredibly lively and sparkling eyes, great skin, youthful vigour and enthusiasm, along with generally great health. What separates these people?
Truly nothing will age you faster than a diet high in processed foods and low in nutrients, little to no physical exercise, and no real love for life. My theory is that your body can tell you've given up so it follows suit and lets go. Muscles weaken, fat accumulates, cells are replaced at a slower rate, and you look and feel old.
By staying active and participating in life you will keep yourself young. I'm not talking about planning a few workouts into your otherwise sedentary lifestyle (although that certainly helps!) but building your life around physical activity, such as routinely riding your bike to the grocery store to pick up groceries. Many of your hobbies and recreational activities should help to keep you fit such as hiking, biking, skiing, or yoga.
Many studies have shown that exercise keeps you healthy, as well. Just 30 minutes of exercise 3 times a week can cut your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by a whopping 60%. As for ageing, a French study found that between those who took antioxidants and those who do not those who did had 23% fewer wrinkles. And in an effort to keep older folks lively some towns have converted children's playgrounds into ones for older adults.
